The Church of Christ At Greenpoint
The Church is situated on one of the most picturesque blocks in the Brooklyn community of Greenpoint. This is attested to by the picture above, which was originally published in a calendar. It is only a few steps from the pretty, and locally popular, Monsignor McGolrick Park, visible in the background.
The neighborhood is predominantly Polish, with Catholicism being the dominant religion of the area. There is an extensive ethnic mix, however, and the Church itself has a number of Filipino members.
There is also a significant Latin American presence in the area. Beyond that, almost every ethnic group on the planet is to some extent represented in the local population. Greenpoint is a relatively low-crime area, being mainly a blue collar neighborhood with many Mom-and-Pop businesses. The majority of the population is made up of families.
The unfortunate reality, however, is that this is not an easy neighborhood in which to do effective evangelism and build a Church. Because of the predominance of Catholicism, there is very little openness to the true Gospel here. The congregation is highly committed to an uphill battle in the effort to reach out to the spiritually needy people of this community.
